Privacy Policy — Obi
Last updated: 14 June 2026
Obi ("the app", "we") is an Android TV app that identifies the vinyl record playing near your device and shows the matching release and synced lyrics. This policy explains what data the app processes and why.

What the app accesses
Microphone audio
When you start a scan, the app listens through your device's microphone to recognize the music that is playing. The audio is converted into an acoustic "fingerprint" on your device and used only to identify the song. We do not record, store, or transmit raw audio, and we do not use the microphone except while you are actively running a scan.
Information sent to third-party services
To identify music and show release details and lyrics, the app sends the minimum data needed to these services, each under its own privacy policy:
- Apple ShazamKit — receives the audio fingerprint to identify the recording. https://www.apple.com/legal/privacy/
- Discogs — receives the identified artist/title to look up the vinyl release. https://www.discogs.com/about/privacy/
- LRCLIB — receives the artist/title to fetch time-synced lyrics. https://lrclib.net/
- Google Firebase (Analytics, Crashlytics, Remote Config) — see below.
Analytics and diagnostics (Google Firebase)
- Analytics collects anonymous usage events (e.g. a scan started, a match found) and standard device/usage information to help us understand how the app is used.
- Crashlytics collects crash and error diagnostics so we can fix problems.
- Remote Config delivers configuration to the app.
These services may process device and app-instance identifiers. See Google's policy: https://firebase.google.com/support/privacy and https://policies.google.com/privacy.
What we do NOT do
- We do not require an account or ask for your name, email, contacts, or location.
- We do not sell your data or use it for advertising.
- We do not retain raw microphone audio.
Data retention
We do not maintain our own user database. Aggregate analytics and crash data are retained by Google Firebase according to its standard retention settings.
Children
Obi is not directed to children under 13 and does not knowingly collect data from them.
Your choices
You can stop all data processing by not running scans and uninstalling the app. To request questions about your data, contact us at the email above.
Changes
We may update this policy; the "last updated" date will change accordingly.
